End of 8th: Charlotte Knights 4, Norfolk Tides 3 -- Deunte Heath (2/3 of an inning) and Donnie Veal (1/3) combined to toss a scoreless frame before Heath Bell took the mound for Norfolk. (side note: Heath Bell -- 6-3, 250-pounds -- is a big dude.)

Bell walked Josh Phegley to begin the inning, but worked out of any further trouble.

End of 7th: Charlotte Knights 4, Norfolk Tides 3 -- LHP Frank De Los Santos replaced Surkamp and retired the first two batters of the inning easily before walking two. He recovered to strike out Jemile Weeks to end the threat.

Kelvin De La Cruz replaced Meek. He began the inning by striking out Dan Black. Jared Mitchell then worked a walk for the sixth-straight game. He has walked at least once in 21 of his 34 games this season.

De La Cruz then caught Mitchell trying to steal second before walking Micah Johnson. In an effort to keep Johnson from stealing second, De La Cruz was called for a quick pitch. However, the Knights couldn't capitalize any further.

End of 6th: Charlotte Knights 4, Norfolk Tides 3 -- Surkamp worked around a leadoff double by Ivan De Jesus, that didn't miss leaving the park by much to leave the game in line for the win.

Surkamp's final line: 6 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 8 Ks -- 99 pitches (68 strikes).

Evan Meek retired the Knights in order.

Guasman's final line: 5 IP, 6 H, 4 R, BB, 6 K's -- 87 pitches.

End of 5th: Charlotte Knights 4, Norfolk Tides 3 – Surkamp worked around a one-out infield single to toss a scoreless inning. Through four he has fanned seven.

In his first BB&T game, Micah Johnson is proving to be worth the price of admission. With two outs and Blake Tekotte on second, Johnson worked the count full before doubling on a groundball to center that would have been a single for anyone else.

Johnson then came around to score on a single by Carlos Sanchez, who moved to SS to make room for Johnson at second. Josh Phegley then stepped to the plate and put the Knights up one with his 5th home run of the season.

End of 4th: Charlotte Knights 0, Norfolk Tides 3 – With one down, Cord Phelps lined a single past a diving Matt Davidson. Peguero followed with an infield single of his own and the two advanced to second and third on a bouncer back to the pitcher off the bat of Brett Wallace.

Steve Lombardozzi then knocked in two with a jam shot to center, before being picked off first by Surkamp to end the inning.

Gausman hit 96 on the BB&T BallPark radar gun several times on his way to sending Danks, Davidson and Hernandez down in order.

End of 3rd: Charlotte Knights 0, Norfolk Tides 1 – After getting Buck Britton to fly to center to begin things, Surkamp missed inside and over the plate to Brian Ward, who gave the Tides the lead with his second home run of the season.

The Knights’ southpaw recovered to pick up K’s No. 5 (Julio Borbon, swinging) and 6 (Weeks, looking for the second time) to end the inning.

Charlotte left them loaded. After Blake Tekotte (single) and Dan Black (BB) each reached to begin the inning, Jared Mitchell K’d for the 53rd time in 34 games. Micah Johnson then picked up his first single at BB&T BallPark to load the bases, but Gausman got Carlos Sanchez (shallow fly to center) and Josh Phegley (pop to third) to escape.

The hit for Johnson extended his hitting streak to six games. Since being promoted from Double-A Birmingham on May 13, Johnson had hit in six of seven games overall.

End of 2nd: Charlotte Knights 0, Norfolk Tides 0 – Surkamp struck out the side. It took him eight total pitches to get Francisco Peguero and Brett Wallace looking, before Steve Lombardozzi lasted long enough to see 10 pitches.

Gausman fanned Jordan Danks before getting Matt Davidson and Gorkys Hernandez to bounce out. The former No. 4 pick in the 2012 draft has not allowed a run in 16.1 innings with the Tide.

End of 1st: Charlotte Knights 0, Norfolk Tides 0 – Eric Surkamp caught Jemile Weeks looking to begin the game. After Ivan De Jesus singled up the middle, Cord Phelps lined into a double play.

Baltimore Orioles No. 2 prospect, Kevin Gausman sent the Knights down in order in the first. Micah Johnson lined to left in his first BB&T at-bat. Carlos Sanchez bounced to first and Josh Phegley chased a changeup.
