Knights drop second straight to Syracuse, 16-9

Knights’ pitchers turned in five one-two-three innings and two more in which they allowed just one hit on Friday night.

Unfortunately, they also tossed two of the uglier innings any of the 10,295 fans at BB&T BallPark have probably ever seen in what ended up being a 16-9 face-palm-inducing loss to the Syracuse Chiefs.

With the White Sox playing on Friday, Deunte Heath – who was the day’s scheduled starter – was held out of the game incase Chicago required his services later this week, leaving the Knights short staffed.

The lack of a safety net loomed large in the fifth inning, when the Knights (38-58) allowed six runs to turn a 5-0 edge into a one-run deficit.  It then loomed much larger in the eighth inning when they surrendered a season-worst 10 runs.

The 16 runs allowed was a season-high for Charlotte, who entered the eighth with a 7-6 edge and fell to 0-2 in its four-game series with the Chiefs (57-37).

“We were under the gun with the amount of pitchers we had available tonight,” Knights manager Joel Skinner said. “You hate to see that happen, but we just in a bind there. The guys understand that it’s a bullpen day and when the score gets to a certain point, you (don’t have a choice).

“It’s one game,” Skinner continued. “We play 144. We’ll just move forward.”

In both the fifth and eighth innings, Syracuse first baseman Tyler Moore hit bases-clearing doubles. Moore finished the night 3-for-5 with a season-high six runs knocked in.

In two games against the Knights this season, Moore is now 5-for-10 with a home run and eight RBIs.

Parker Frazier (0-1) began the eighth inning for the Knights having already been stretched two and 1/3 innings and failed to retire a batter before being replaced by Donnie Veal four batters in.

Veal fared worse, allowing the next four Chiefs batters to reach base before recording the inning’s first out. When the dust finally settled, every Syracuse batter had reached base and scored in the eighth except for Steven Souza Jr.

Moore scored twice.

The game began promisingly enough for Charlotte, with Matt Zaleski tossing three scoreless innings and the Knights posting five runs in four innings of Syracuse starter Aaron Laffey, who entered the game leading the IL with 11 wins.

Maikel Cleto came on in relief of Zaleski and was charged with five of the six runs the Chiefs scored in the fifth.

The Knights offense finished with 15 hits – three by Micah Johnson (3-for-5, two RBIs) and Josh Phegley (3-for-5, RBI, R), while the Chiefs finished with 17 – 15 of which came in their two big innings.

“It’s a tough one,” said Johnson. “We play so many games that you can’t really dwell on it because you don’t have time to. We play the next day. It’s not like the NFL where you have time and play once a week, so you think about it for a little bit, but need to get things going again the next day.”

Notes: According to Joel Skinner, Deunte Heath was scratched from Fridays start because the White Sox informed the Knights manager that they might need him.

Notes: Matt Zaleski gets the start tonight for the Knights, not Deunte Heath as had previously been reported. Not a scratch for Heath, just a mixup. ... Thursday’s starter Shawn Hill was placed on the disabled list this afternoon. He had complained of lacking drive in his legs following the outing. … The newly acquired (from the Houston Astros organization) Bobby Doran has taken Hill’s place on the Knights 25-man roster. He’ll wear No. 28. … Chiefs’ starter Aaron Laffey enters today leading the International League in wins with 11. He’s seventh in ERA at 2.82. … With a 4-for-5 night with two runs batted in, Syracuse OF Steven Souza Jr. moved into first in the IL in RBIs with 60. His batting average climbed to .374 (also an IL best). … After spending most of the season with the lowest combined batting average of any team in the IL, the Knights have moved up to 11th (.250). … Josh Phegley, Marcus Semien and Carlos Sanchez each had three-hit games in last night’s 11-6 loss to Syracuse.

Pitching: RHP Blake Treinen (4-0, 2.20 ERA)

Game time: 7:05 p.m.

TV/Radio: MiLB.tv / ESPN 730

Notes: Charlotte catcher Josh Phegley was named to the International League All-Star Team today and in a weird way has A.J. Pierzynski to thank. When the Red Sox designated the longtime Chicago catcher for assignment, it created room on their roster for rookie Christian Vazquez, whose place Phegley is taking on the IL roster. Phegley leads all IL catchers with13 home runs and is hitting .253 with 42 runs scored, 20 doubles, three triples and 38 RBIs in 70 games. He’ll join Tyler Saladino, who was elected to start at shortstop. … Andy Wilkins and Matt Davidson each homered in Wednesday’s double-header. Both players now have 16 long balls, one off Dan Johnson, who leads the Il with 17 this season. … The Knights are hitting .315 in July (nine games) with nine home runs and 50 RBIS. … According to reports out of Houston (Charlotte has not yet confirmed), the Astros have traded 25-year-old Bobby Doran to the White Sox for a player to be named later. Doran, who stands 6-foot-6 and is known as a sinkerball pitcher – is expected to report to Charlotte once the move becomes official.

Matt Davidson's walk-off home run highlights long day of baseball for Charlotte Knights

It’s getting to the point where the fans in the outfield at BB&T BallPark – which measures just 330 feet to left and 315’ to right – might want to consider borrowing hard hats from the construction crew working on Fourth Street.

Before Monday’s double-header against the Gwinnett Braves, Knights outfielder Jordan Danks took a look at the flag blowing out and offered a bit of advice to his teammates.

“It’s a good day to put the ball in the air boys,” he said.

Two games and a combined 10 home runs – including a walk-off shot by Matt Davidson in the 10th inning of Game 2 – later and it’s safe to say Danks had a good grasp on how BB&T BallPark was going to play.

There have now been 115 long balls (59 by opponents, 56 by the Knights) hit in Charlotte in 41 games this season – 31 more than Columbus’ Huntington Park, which ranks second in the International League with 84, while the league average stands at 60.0.

Davidson’s was the first of the 115 to be of the walk-off variety and gave the Knights a 7-5 Game 2 win. It was his second of the night and is a lock to become the answer to a Knights’ trivia question someday.

“Things feel good,” said Davidson, who is hitting .353 (12-for-34) over his last 10 games. “But I’m never going to act like I’ve figured it out again in my whole life. Coming out of spring (training) I felt great and then all of the sudden I lost it. I’m just going to keep on working and really focus every single at-bat.”

The 2-for-4 showing brought the White Sox top prospect’s average up to .201 on the season.

In his second start in Charlotte since being acquired from the Blue Jays organization, Knights right-hander Shawn Hill found out first hand in Game 1, just how small the park can play.

Hill (2-3) allowed three home runs in six innings of work in an eventual 11-5 loss to the Braves, but two of the long balls likely wouldn’t have left any other park in the IL.

Hill struggled to hide his frustrations after a short home run by Mark Hamilton gave the Braves an 8-2 lead in the fifth. He finished the afternoon with an ugly stat line, which read: six innings pitched, 10 hits, eight runs (all earned), one walk and three strikeouts.

“He’s just happened to give up some lazy fly balls that have turned into home runs in this ballpark,” said Danks, who recorded three doubles and scored three runs on Monday. “I don’t think it’s intimidating for him or anything, but it’s definitely frustrating at times for the pitchers.”

In Game 2, Tyler Saladino (who also homered in Game 1), Blake Tekotte and Davidson each went yard to help Charlotte take a 5-5 game into the tenth inning before Davidson’s heroics.

"I was just trying to get a good pitch to hit and he hung a cutter, which got in on me a little bit, but luckily the fence is a little short (to left) and it got over," Davidson said. "I’m just trying to keep things simple, get a good pitch to hit, and just frickin' hit it."

Matt Zaleski got the nod on the mound for Charlotte and tossed three innings, allowing four runs on six hits. Three Knights relievers then combined to hold the Braves to one run over the game’s next seven innings.

Ryan Kussmaul (2-3) recorded the win after tossing two scoreless, hitless, innings. He struck out three.

Charlotte – which entered the day with the highest total attendance in the IL – packed 16,946 fans into BB&T BallPark over the course of the day and went over 400,000 for the year (402,723).

The double-header split also secured a .500 (15-15) month of June for the Knights, who appear to be on the rebound after an 8-22 May.

“The timing (of Davidson’s home run) was great,” said Knights manager Joel Skinner, who was coaching third after Ryan Newman earned an early exit for arguing a foul ball in the seventh. “I got to high-five him, or high-10 him actually as he rounded the bases.”
